Sylvester Palm — 25 Gallon

Phoenix sylvestris

Bring a striking tropical focal point to your landscape with the Sylvester Palm. Its silver-green, feather-shaped fronds form a graceful canopy above a single trunk that develops a distinctive diamond pattern as it matures. A beautiful choice for spacious front yards, driveway accents, and sunny garden beds.

Size & Growth

  • Container size: 25 gallon.

  • Size at purchase: Height, canopy width, and trunk development vary by grower and individual plant. Contact Colibri Nursery to confirm current measurements.

  • Mature size: Approximately 40 feet tall with a canopy about 20–25 feet wide.

  • Growth habit: Single-trunk palm with an arching crown. Allow plenty of room for its mature canopy.

Care Guide

Sunlight: Full sun provides the best growth and appearance.

Watering: Water regularly after planting while roots become established. Adjust watering for rainfall, soil drainage, and weather. Established palms tolerate drought, but benefit from appropriate irrigation during dry periods. Avoid keeping the root zone constantly saturated.

Soil: Prefers well-drained soil, including sandy soil. Avoid locations where water collects.

Fertilizer: Use a palm-specific fertilizer containing potassium, magnesium, and micronutrients. Follow the product label for application rates and timing.

Pruning: Remove fully brown, dead fronds and unwanted spent flower or fruit stalks. Retain healthy green fronds and avoid excessive trimming. Protect the trunk and central growing point from injury.

Planting: Set the palm at its original nursery planting depth. Keep mulch away from the trunk and leave room around the base for maintenance.

Placement: Leaf stems have sharp spines. Plant away from narrow walkways, entrances, and children’s play areas.

Plant Health

Sylvester palms are susceptible to lethal bronzing and lethal yellowing. Monitor for unusual canopy discoloration or decline and seek advice from a qualified palm professional.

Fun Fact

The Sylvester Palm is also called the Silver Date Palm or Sugar Date Palm. In India, its sap has traditionally been collected to make sugar!
