Rue (Ruta graveolens) is a hardy, evergreen shrub-like herb native to Southern Europe and parts of North Africa. Known for its strong, bitter aroma and distinctive bluish-green, feathery leaves, rue has a long history of use in traditional medicine, religious rituals, and folklore. It typically grows up to 2 to 3 feet tall and produces small yellow flowers in late spring to summer.
Rue thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it a resilient addition to herb gardens and ornamental borders. While it is occasionally used in small quantities for flavoring in Mediterranean cuisine, it must be used with caution, as large amounts can be toxic. Traditionally, rue was believed to ward off evil spirits and bring protection, and it was once a common plant in monastery and apothecary gardens.
Due to its potent properties, rue is more often grown today as a decorative plant or for its historical and symbolic significance rather than for culinary use.
