Devils Spine

Devil’s Spine (Euphorbia tithymaloides), also known as Redbird Cactus, Jacob’s Ladder, or Zigzag Plant, is a striking tropical succulent native to Central America and the Caribbean. Despite its common names, it is not a true cactus but belongs to the Euphorbia family. The plant is easily recognized by its distinctive zigzag or zigzagging stems, which give it a unique, sculptural appearance.

Devil’s Spine typically grows upright, reaching 2 to 6 feet in height. Its thick, fleshy stems are lined with small, pointed leaves that may be green or variegated. In warm climates, it produces small, bright red or pink bracts that resemble flowers, often attracting hummingbirds.

This plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, making it popular for ornamental use in gardens or as a houseplant in containers. However, like many Euphorbias, it contains a milky sap that can be irritating to the skin and toxic if ingested, so care should be taken when handling it or placing it around pets and children.
