The Croton 'Zanzibar' (Codiaeum variegatum 'Zanzibar') is a striking tropical shrub known for its vibrant, narrow, and arching foliage. This cultivar is a more compact and slower-growing variety compared to other crotons, making it well-suited for indoor environments or as a potted plant on porches or patios.
Key Features:
-
Foliage: The leaves are thin, shoestring-like, and display a captivating mix of colors, including red, orange, yellow, and green. The new growth is typically green and yellow, transitioning to a bronzy red with a bright red midrib as the leaves mature.
-
Size: Reaches a mature height of approximately 2½ to 3 feet, making it ideal for smaller spaces.
- Light Requirements: Thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning, excessive direct sun may scorch the leaves.
- Watering: Prefers consistently moist soil, allowing the top inch to dry out between waterings. Ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: Benefits from moderate to high humidity levels. Regular misting or using a humidity tray can help maintain moisture, especially in drier indoor environments.
- Soil: Requires well-draining, fertile soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and compost can improve drainage and nutrient retention.
- Fertilization: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to early fall) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing in winter when growth slows.
- Toxicity: All parts of the Croton plant are toxic if ingested, so caution should be exercised, especially around children and pets.
