Cabbage palms (Sabal palmetto) grow slowly, reaching mature heights of 40 to 50 feet, with an approximate growth rate of 12 inches per year. Their tall, slender trunk topped with fan-shaped fronds makes them an excellent choice for creating vertical interest in outdoor landscapes, especially in coastal and subtropical environments. Cabbage palms are highly tolerant of drought, salt spray, and a variety of soil types, enhancing their versatility in landscape design. Interestingly, the heart of the cabbage palm was historically consumed by Native Americans, earning it the nickname "cabbage." For care, ensure consistent watering during establishment, plant in well-drained soil, and remove brown fronds regularly to promote healthy growth.
